Staying Balanced During the Holidays 🎄
❄️ *Cue* Mariah Carey’s high-pitched, “IT’S TIIIIIIME!!!” ❄️
The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here! A season full of cozy family and friendly gatherings, Home Alone reruns, festive lights, and home-cooked meals. From Thanksgiving turkey or pernil to Christmas gingerbread cookies or arroz con leche, it’s easy to get carried away as you indulge in all your favorite treats. Some may even worry about slowly packing on the pounds and resort to asking Santa Claus for a long-awaited fitness membership! But what if I told you that your resolutions don’t have to be postponed till a new year? Your resolutions can happen now while still enjoying the holiday fun. To me, the holiday season is about spending time with loved ones, keeping your spirits high, and feeling good in your body. So here are some tips to make you feel wonderful in the most wonderful time of year!
1. Eat Intentionally 🍽️
Make sure to slow down and savor each bite.
Serve smaller portions so food does not go to waste! If you want more, then go for seconds!
Listen to your body and stop when you’re satisfied. Leave the stuffing for the turkey! 🦃
2. Fill Your Plate with Fiber and Protein 🍗🌽
Start with veggies, salads, or fruit to fill up on fiber first (this will also help prevent a huge blood sugar spike).
Include protein like turkey and pernil to feel full longer.
Balance your plate with a little carb, a little fat, and lots of flavor! Lasagna, anyone?!
3. Treat Yourself 🍨
Choose your favorite treats, and don’t feel the pressure to sample everything.
Share desserts with friends or family to taste more without overeating and vice versa!
Enjoy every bite! Savor the moment. I love some warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream (or greek yogurt) and a dash of cinnamon :) 🥧
4. Stay Hydrated 💧
Drink water, sparkling water, or tea throughout the day.
Limit sugary drinks and alcohol (if anything, opt for something like Diet Coke or a pre/probiotic soda) and pace yourself by alternating with water.
5. Move it! 💃🏽
Walk after meals, play games, or dance the night away! A little Bachata never hurt nobody! This will boost your digestion, mood, and energy.
6. Come Prepared! 📝
Fast before the event to make room for the food you’ll eat!
Bring a healthy dish to gatherings to ensure you have healthy options (salad, home-made desserts, charcuterie boards, etc).
Keep snacks like nuts, fruit, or protein bars handy to avoid overeating on an empty stomach.
7. Mind > Matter 🏠💖
Remember that the holidays are about joy and connection, so focus on the people you love and making memories. Give yourself permission to indulge, then get back to your routine afterwards! You got this :)
